Founder Gene Owen is a retired attorney who happens to be very entrepreneurial. Evidence of this is that Gene devised a stainless steel trash chute for his own kitchen remodeling project a few years ago. In creating a solution for his own trash and recyclables, he developed and produced a unit made of stainless steel which removes trash from the kitchen area by way of a chute through the wall. Gene was being practical: This solution eliminated the need to carry heavy trash compactor bags, or the need to empty the kitchen trash bin multiples times each week. Instead, he devised a solution that enabled him to simply roll a 55-gallon bin to the curb for pickup once a week.

Gene still uses the prototype in his kitchen, and over time numerous friends and family members asked him about obtaining one for their own use. Gene set about refining the original design, as well as developing manufacturing capabilities. Joining the company in 2005, partner Marilyn Oden-McGill helped build a company around the product, setting up the distribution channels and launching the marketing and promotion. Today, the company name is Enviro-Trash Concepts, and the company's premier trash containment system is the Clean Chute product line.
